The University of Lausanne and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne jointly created in 1998 the Executive Master Program: "Management of Technology" - MoT. The objective is to enable professionals who are concerned with innovation and entrepreneurship to develop the skills they will need to foster the creation of new ventures. It is an interdisciplinary program that provides people from different backgrounds with the capabilities to start new activities that cross the traditional boundaries between engineering and business cultures, for example.
The physical proximity of the two institutions enables them to share their expertise and experience in areas that are fully complementary. The presence of the scientific park next to the campus site also stimulates the creation of start-ups. Both institutions are convinced that working together will create a dynamic environment that contributes to the development of competitive and innovative enterprises.

Background
Two facts are at the root of MoT:
- Technological innovations with potential for the creation of new enterprises or new activities in existing corporations are often not fully developed.
- The start-up of new enterprises or new activities requires a team in which all members contribute their specialist expertise. However, in order for the team to be effective, everyone must also be competent in the other team-members’ fields.
In particular, due to a lack of understanding or knowledge of the market and the societal, cultural and international environment, innovation strategies must be very carefully developed. Program Objectives
- Develop and stimulate entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship competencies;
- Ensure success in innovation by encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to the conception, production and commercialization of products or services;
- Provide insights into the constraints and interactions within the technological, business, international and social environments.
Target participants
University graduates in Business/Humanities on one hand and in Engineering/Natural and Bio/Med Sciences on the other hand; people who wish to boost their career potential through a multidisciplinary approach, and who are especially motivated by entrepreneurship and the management of innovation projects. Strong professional and international experience is required, unless the graduate is already driving a real innovative and entrepreneurial project. Positioning
It differs from other postgraduate programs in management by its orientation towards innovation and entrepreneurship/ intrapreneurship. It features:
- Development of real business plans by multidisciplinary teams;
- 5-6 week summer term spent in a highly regarded university in the USA;
- 4 month project usually performed in pairs within a company/new venture;
- Possibility to maintain 60-80% of professional activities while training takes place in Lausanne on Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday;
- Three extras modules addressing biotechnology are offered in 2004.
